Season 2010 a glittering success for Giants
Editors BlogSo the season is over already, in the blink of an eye and South Dorset Giants have much to celebrate from their summer of 2010.

The club has followed the blueprint of a number of clubs in the South West by operating as a dual code club.

The link up between Weymouth RUFC and South Dorset Giants has born plenty of fruit with the union players gaining vital experience and fitness during the summer and with a core of league specialists coming into the side to add a bit of nouse the results have improved.

Their first season of league action was in 2009 and despite some encouraging performances the Giants were winless.

This season they got that monkey off their back early on and were able to finish strongly in the league whilst getting to the semi-final of the cup competition.

The online club shop is out of stock of t-shirts and training shirts which is a good sign and a large untapped audience could still be converted to watching the club on a regular basis.

The other key thing that will need to happen is for other clubs to form in the South West making the league stronger and extending the season.

The club is holding its presentation evening on Saturday 14th August and Monmouth Avenue and it will be interesting to see who picks up the top awards.

For me personally it has been great to see the development of the team and the club over 2010. It is often mentioned that I am in exile from Weymouth up north so supporting Giants helps maintain my bond with the town.

To have a successful club to support, one that is going places is a good feeling.

Long may it continue.

Know your enemy #7 East Devon Eagles
Rival clubs.I hadnt planned on taking all season to complete this series but here is the final installment

The East Devon Eagles were formed in 2007, a year before our very own South Dorset Giants club.

They have come on leaps and bounds and are disctinctive in their pink shirts.

Their official website describes their recent achievements thus..

Last season the East Devon Eagles were the RFL Conference South West league winners and Eagles player Rich Cadywould was recognized as an outstanding player and was awarded the RFL Conference Player of the Year 2008.

Our meeting with them this season ended in a 74-20 loss, so I am hoping we will get a bit closer in 2011.
Know your enemy #6 Devon Sharks
Rival clubs.Unlike other clubs in the league the Sharks have a briliant website with lots of good information and history.

Rather than try and replicate it, here is a link to the clubs history page for your perusal...

News42 year old former Castleford and Wakefield rugby league player Brad Davis made his debut for Weymouth based South Dorset Giants in this weekends final South West Conference encounter at Monmouth Avenue.

The match saw Giants beat the previously undefeated league leaders in a tense match 44-42.

Know your enemy #5 Exeter Centurions
Rival clubs.Trawling the interweb for information for these pieces has been a challenge. Most of the clubs in the south west are pretty new and history information is not readily available on websites.

There isn'tmuch out there on the Exeter club, but I will keep digging...

12th June 2010 - South Dorset Giants 32 v South Somerset Warriors 22
Reports"It's the best we have ever played". That's how manager Dave Allan described this victory over local rivals South Somerset from Yeovil. The game started off perfectly for the home team when constant pressure led to man mountain Tim 'Yogi' Comben crashing over from a penalty close to the line after twenty minutes. The remaining half belonged to the Somerset side resulting in two tries for David Newcombe and Richard Champion.
